SAD or Seasonal Affective Disorder is a condition where in a person develops a feeling of gloom due to the weather conditions. This condition gets more aggravated in winter months rather than in any other season. The reason of SAD is the dip in temperature and short days in winters. The lack of sunlight is the reason of this condition.
Seasonal Affective Disorder is a state of depression. This trend is generally seen in people living in the colder areas. It is also believed that women are more prone to SAD than men. This condition is very serious and in some cases it is there for a long time without being detected. The exact cause of this illness is not known. There is no specific measure in which you can find out that you are suffering from SAD. It has some symptoms like, tiredness, fatigue, irritability, body pain, difficulty in sleeping etc. There is no reason to support the fact that why people suffer from SAD. It does not matter from which part of the world you come from, what the colour your skin is, you may or may not suffer from this condition. It is difficult condition for the person suffering from SAD but it is more difficult for the children. SAD not only affects the person suffering from it emotionally but also affects the performance of that person in various activities. The children suffering from SAD show behavioural problems like temperamental problems, staying aloof, crying without reason. These children’s academic performance also suffers as they are not able to concentrate.
How can SAD be treated? Light therapy is the answer to this problem. The scientists over the years have discovered the value and importance of light in the human life. So what better way to treat a condition which is caused by the dearth of light? The light therapy is an effective tool to treat SAD. The person suffering from the condition is made to sit in front of a light box. The light box contains a certain wavelength of light which imitates the natural light. The melatonin hormone which is the culprit of SAD is suppressed and serotonin hormone is released by the body. Serotonin hormone helps the patient to be active and alert. The SAD patient should be encouraged to indulge in exercising. The patient should be refrained from staying alone. The patients should be encouraged to get natural light as much as possible. It is also important to be happy. Find out ways which would make you happy. Be with group of happy people or watch a good movie. You can also plan vacations with the people you like and enjoy to sunny places. Train your mind to love all weather conditions. Prepare yourself for winters and keep saying to yourself that you will have good time and enjoy every moment of it.
SAD is a mental condition and it does not require anything but a positive attitude from you. If you are positive and strong inside your mind then nothing can make you gloomy, sad or depressed
